THE MUSHROOM OUTPOST · SPECIES NOTES

Reishi

Ganoderma species · An occasional specialty, not a skillet mushroom

Reishi is a woody bracket fungus associated with traditional East Asian herbal practices. Its hard, bitter fruiting body makes it unsuitable for an ordinary sauté or mushroom dinner.

01 / IN THE KITCHEN

Flavor & preparation

Not a culinary mushroom: woody and very bitter. People traditionally prepare certain species as decoctions or use commercially prepared extracts, but preparation and safety need care.

02 / WHAT'S INSIDE

Nutrition & research

This is not marketed as an everyday food source. Species, growing conditions and extract concentrations can vary considerably.

03 / EVIDENCE CHECK

Claimed benefits

Reishi is often advertised for immune support, stress, sleep and general wellness. Robust evidence that it delivers these benefits or treats illness in humans is lacking. Products may interact with medications, and adverse effects have been reported.
